new york and new jersey rapidly on the road to recovery. it tells us with hope that we can get something done quickly. when we explain to our colleagues what we needed they listened carefully. we were really very glad about that. let me say a few specific things. there is very ample funding in this bill. homeowners lost more than $31,000 of damage in their home. they can get relief so that small-business owners who need more than loans can get to relief. there's ample funding for the army corps. it was free with all of the aid here. a couple more plants. mitigation is in this bill. they are not new projects that come out of the blue. they are building on existing products to prevent damage from occurring it got forbid another sandy like storm hit us. it will allow to install concrete polls rather than the wooden poles they had. it will allow our subway system and june to put in protection so that the waters will not flood the damn again. it will allow our hospitals when they rebuild to make sure that they put those extremely expensive machines on higher floors so if god forbid

to help the citizens of new york, new jersey, and other parts of the northeast as they recover from the damn of hurricane van dihurricane sandy. as we did before, we have an opportunity to help maim make families and communities whole again. i hope my colleagues will join in moving quickly to send aid to those affected by sandy as they continue to recover and rebuild. the senate must move swiftly to approve supplemental disaster aid and act to give the intelligence community the stools tools it needs to -- the tools it needs to keep our nation safe before the christmas holiday. before we leave for chris marks we'll have to finish our work on sandy and fisa. they're both extremely important, but they have to be completed. so everyone should understand we have that to do, and it appears at this stage we'll see if anything changes -- but it appears that we're going to be coming back the day after christmas to complete work on the fiscal cliff and a few other leftover items. mr. mcconnell: mr. president, i want to start by extending my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims o

of new york city. it's near danbury, connecticut. the young man who police say was the shooter reportedly walked into two different classrooms at sandy hook elementary. he fired dozens of rounds. he killed 26 people. 18 children pronounced dead at the scene. six adults pronounced dead at the scene. and then two children who survived their initial wounds and were hospitalized later died in hospital. the shooter then killed himself at the school. the associated press is citing a law enforcement official moments ago saying authorities found more than the previously described two guns at the school once they responded. more firearms than the two we have previously heard about. they're not giving any further details yet. but that report just in from the associated press. the students who were not shot, none of them older than fourth graders, were escorted out of the building by police officers this morning. they were taken to a fire station next door. police officers reportedly told some of the children to keep their eyes closed until they had reached the parking lot. law enforcement officials

on a sleepy town in new york. this is how it looked around 6:00 in the morning today. there was a massive house fire that ravaged homes overlooking lake ontario. the house fire spread as firefighters tried to dodge gunfire. the firefighters apparently walked into a trap just as they were responding to this. at last word, two firefighters are dead, three other first responders are wounded, and alleged gunman is dead. authorities can't say whether other bodies might be found in the eight homes destroyed or damaged by the fire in the town of webster. shocking, bizarre, tragic today. cnn's poppy harlow is in new york, trying to piece together this horrible chain of events here on christmas eve. so what happened, because authorities are saying potentially this was a trap laid out for the firefighters. >> that's what the police chief gerald pickering said in the last press conference, we're awaiting right now another press conference that should start any minute. but he did say that it appears that possibly these four first responders were lured into what was a trap. it started at 5:35 this mor

. and there's already article. a "new york times" article today about michael cooper about what will happen with the gun debate. we've had sorts of stories written after abby gifford was shot. it seems like something has changed but maybe it's because of the moral obscenity that it's so past anything conceivable. and so, i wanted to trace for a moment, as we're thinking about where the white house is going to be on the. everyone is talking about the president, where the president has been in the past. what the trajectory of his stance on this issue is. he's moved in one direction and quite directionally without much wavering back and forth. as a young politician he was in the area of the country with some of the strictest gun safety regime in the country and incredible political constituency for that. he was a strong advocate. in 1996, when running for state senate illinois when asked, do you support legislation to ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns and he answered, yes." later a staff in 2007 of his campaign told politico a staff member had answered that question for him

for us. in the spring we experienced late freezes in michigan and new york and pennsylvania that wiped out fruit crops. a lot of small family farms, farms in northern michigan wiped out. in my home state late freezes in the spring caused cherry producers to lose practically their entire crop right off the bat. it warmed up, the buds came out, then they had a deep freeze; killed everything. our growers produce 75% of the u.s. supply of cherries. that's around 270 million pounds. and the cherry producers experienced 98% loss. now in our amendment, in the disaster bill and in the farm bill, we give them some help because they spent the rest of the crop year this year having to pay to maintain the orchards and the frees, eating the costs and hoping the trees will bounce back next year and produce a crop. so they have all the costs of maintaining everything but no revenue coming in. cherry producers were also forced to fight spreading diseases like cherry leaf spot and bacterial tinker, making the trees even more costly to maintain and at risk of loss. they didn't just lose their crop this

. they keep on saying we haven't put forward real spending cuts. actually there was a graft in "the new york times" today that showed. they are the same categories, right? there is a little bit of tweaks here and there, there's a few differences, but, you know, we are right there. and on the revenue side there is a difference, in terms of them wanting to preserve tax breaks for folks between 250 and a million that we just can't afford. i mean keep in mind i'm in that income category, i'd love to, now, not pay as much in taxes, but i also think it's the right thing to do for us to make sure that people who have less, people who are working, people who are striving, people who, you know, are hoping for their kids, that they have opportunity. that's what we campaigned about. that's what we talked about. and this is not a situation where i'm unwilling to compromise. this is not a situation where i'm trying to rub their face in anything. i think anybody who looks at this objectively would say that coming off my election, i have met them at least halfway in order to get something done for the coun
